Northwest Territories Health Insurance Plan

The Northwest Territories provides government health care called the NWT Health Care Plan.

Alberta Blue Cross administers benefits on behalf of the GNWT for the following Extended Health Insurance programs:

  • The Specified Disease Conditions Program
  • Extended Health Benefits for Seniors Program
  • Métis Health Benefits Program

DENTAL
- What is covered: Extended Health Benefits programs offered by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Federal Government programs such as the Seniors Program, Specified Disease Conditions Program and Métis Health Benefit Program or Non-Insured Health Benefits Program for First Nations and Inuit (NIHB) provide coverage of the cost of eligible dental services.
- What is NOT covered: Northwest Territories provides government health insurance does NOT cover dental services, other than specific procedures related to jaw injury or disease.

DRUGS
- What is covered:
The government health insurance covers drugs prescribed by a physician and administered in the hospitals only. Extended Health Benefits programs provide coverage for eligible prescription drug products to residents in need.
- What is NOT covered
: The NWT Health Care Plan does not provide coverage for extended health benefits like medicine from the drugstore (unless you are eligible for a government Extended Health Benefit program).

TRAVEL INSURANCE
- What is covered:
For residents travelling outside of Canada, the cost of medically necessary services needed for an emergency or sudden illness will be provided at NWT rates only, in Canadian currency.
- What is NOT covered:
The cost of health services may be considerably higher outside Canada. You will be responsible for paying the difference between the fee charged and the amount reimbursed by the Health Services Administration Office.

VISION
- What is covered:
Extended Health Benefits programs offered by the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Federal Government provide coverage of the cost of eligible vision care benefits to residents in need.
- What is NOT covered:
The NWT Health Care Plan also does not provide coverage for eyeglasses  (unless you are eligible for a government Extended Health Benefit program).

PARAMEDICAL
- What is covered
: Extended Health Benefits programs will pay reasonable and customary charges for medically necessary supplies and equipment provided in Canada for eligible residents.
- What is NOT covered:
The NWT Health Care Plan does NOT provide coverage for paramedical services  (unless you are eligible for a government Extended Health Benefit program).

HOSPITAL ROOM
- What is covered:
Services Covered: accommodation and meals at the standard ward care; nursing services, when provided by the hospital; laboratory, X-ray and diagnostic procedures, and interpretation; drugs prescribed by a physician and administered in the hospital; use of the operating room, case room, and anaesthetic facilities required for diagnosis and treatment, including necessary equipment and supplies; radiotherapy treatment, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy when provided by an insured facility; detoxification services in an approved health facility.
- What is NOT covered: Services Not Covered by the government health insurance: hospital charges above the standard ward rate for private or semi-private accommodation; services that are not medically required, such as cosmetic surgery services that are considered experimental; ambulance charges (except inter-hospital transfers); dental services, other than specific procedures related to jaw injury or disease; alcohol and drug rehabilitation, unless prior approved.

PRIVATE DUTY NURSING AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
- What is covered: nursing services, when provided by the hospital.
 Extended Health Benefits programs offered by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Federal Government such as the Seniors Program, Specified Disease Conditions Program, Métis Health Benefit Program, and Non-Insured Health Benefits Program for First Nations and Inuit (NIHB) provide coverage of the cost of eligible medical supplies and home services.
- What is NOT covered: The NWT Health Care Plan does NOT provide coverage for extended health benefits like medicine from the drugstore, eyeglasses, dental services or medical supplies (unless you are eligible for a government Extended Health Benefit program).

HEARING AIDS
- What is covered:
covered only by Extended Health Benefits programs offered by the Federal or Territorial Governments
- What is NOT covered:
Not covered by the Government health insurance.

AMBULANCE
- What is covered:
NWT Health Care Plan covers only inter-hospital transfers.
- What is NOT covered:
The government health insurance does NOT cover ambulance charges (except inter-hospital transfers).
